Responsible gambling — limits, breaks, and AU support

Tools available at VegasNow plus the independent AU helplines worth knowing.

Online casino play is designed with a built-in house edge: the operator wins on average over time, regardless of any individual session result. That's the basic maths of pokies, table games and live dealer. Responsible gambling means treating any deposit as the cost of entertainment, not as expected income, and using the in-app tools below to keep play within limits you set in advance.

In-app tools at VegasNow

Deposit limits: daily, weekly, or monthly caps that hard-stop deposits over the limit. Reduce-limit requests apply immediately; raise-limit requests have a 7-day cooling period. Loss limits: same cadence as deposits but applied to net losses. Session-time limits: prompt or auto-logout after a configurable session length (15 min increments). Reality-check pop-ups: a non-intrusive in-game panel showing time elapsed and net P&L every 30/60/90 minutes.

All four tools are under Account → Responsible Gambling. VegasNow applies any change immediately for tightening, with a 7-day delay for loosening — this is a standard regulatory pattern that prevents in-session limit raises.

Time-out and self-exclusion

Time-out: 24-hour, 7-day, or 30-day account freeze. No play possible during the period; deposits are locked. The account auto-reactivates at the end. Self-exclusion: 6 months, 12 months, or permanent. During self-exclusion the account is closed, all promotional contact stops, and the email and ID documents are added to an internal block list to prevent re-registration on the same operator.

Self-exclusion does not extend across operators. If you need a cross-operator block, Australia does not currently have a national self-exclusion register for offshore casinos — the closest equivalent is BetStop (betstop.gov.au), which covers Australian-licensed wagering operators only.

Independent Australian support — free and confidential

Gambling Help Online (gamblinghelponline.org.au) — free 24/7 chat, email, and 1800 858 858 phone line. Counsellors are trained in problem-gambling support and can be a useful first call even if you're not sure whether your gambling is a problem.

Lifeline (lifeline.org.au, 13 11 14) — for any crisis-mental-health situation, including ones where gambling is a contributing factor.

Financial counselling — free, independent advice on debt and money problems is available via the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007). Many gambling-related financial problems are best addressed alongside gambling support.

MoneySmart (moneysmart.gov.au) — ASIC's consumer education site has a gambling section with tools for tracking spend and recognising warning signs.

Recognising problem gambling

Common warning signs include: spending more time or money than you intended; chasing losses; lying about gambling to family or friends; missing work or social commitments because of play; borrowing to fund gambling; feeling restless or irritable when not playing. Any one of these in isolation is not diagnostic, but the pattern is — and it gets harder to step back the longer it runs. Free confidential support is available at any point, including for people unsure whether they have a problem.
